Mt. Kotobiki

This sacred mountain is where Japanese gods come together.

Its 360-degree view is widely enjoyed by visitors. Okuninushi-no-mikoto, one of the most prominent gods in Japan, and his Japanese harp are worshiped on this sacred mountain. The mountain is described in documents from over 1,300 years ago, has been respected and worshiped by people for centuries, and has become a place where Mikkyo believers come to practice mountaineering asceticism. With an elevation of 1,014 m, even beginners can reach the peak in about 70 minutes. During the Month of the Gods, myriad gods come to Izumo Taisha Grand Shrine in the Izumo region. Ancient folklore says that the gods start their journey in the Izumo region by following the sound of the Japanese harp played by Okuninushi-no-mikoto residing at Mt. Kotobiki. Then, the gods land on this extraordinarily sacred mountain, Mt. Kotobiki, and travel down the Kandogawa River to Izumo Taisha Grand Shrine. Every year on September 23, a ritual is performed at the top of this mountain to welcome gods from all over Japan.
