Cherry Blossoms at Myoyoji Temple

When you reach the top of a steep flight of steps, a splendid temple gate appears with cherry blossoms in the background. This is an excellent photo spot.

These cherry blossoms are unique and different from those that grow over the rest of Japan. They have been given the scientific name “Myoyojizakura”. The tree is estimated to be over 500 years old. It is designated as a protected species of the prefecture. The trees are illuminated at night when they are in bloom. Azaleas bloom after the cherry trees.
